When Switzerland's famous trains run this winter, what they really cost, and the regional train that does the same line for CHF 5.

Before you book
- 01Glacier Express: not running 11 October to 4 December.
- 02The winter season is 5 December to 7 May, leaving Zermatt at 08:50 (plus 07:50 on selected dates)
- 03The real price: fares run up to CHF 166 in second class or CHF 284 in first, plus a compulsory CHF 54 seat.
- 04The cheaper way: ordinary RhB regional trains run the same Bernina line, and a seat between St. Moritz and Tirano is an optional CHF 5
- 05Some Bernina line trains are diverted 29 October to 13 November, so check before you go.

Switzerland's most famous train isn't running until 5 December. Here's what runs instead 🚆🏔️
The regional train over the Bernina is my favourite Swiss ride: same views, no compulsory seat fee.
1️⃣ Glacier Express: not running 11 October to 4 December. The winter season is 5 December to 7 May, leaving Zermatt at 08:50 (plus 07:50 on selected dates)
2️⃣ The real price: fares run up to CHF 166 in second class or CHF 284 in first, plus a compulsory CHF 54 seat. A Swiss Travel Pass doesn't cover the seat
3️⃣ Bernina Express: Chur to Tirano in about four hours. The reservation is compulsory for everyone
4️⃣ The cheaper way: ordinary RhB regional trains run the same Bernina line, and a seat between St. Moritz and Tirano is an optional CHF 5
