Board in Stockholm, wake up in the Arctic. A direct night train runs from 13 December 🚆🌌 This is how I'd chase the northern lights: no airport, and you wake up in the Arctic. 1️⃣ Stockholm: SJ's direct night train to Narvik starts on 13 December, one a day each way, via Umeå, Luleå and Kiruna. Until then you change at Boden 2️⃣ Kiruna: Sweden's northernmost town, and the stop for the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi nearby 3️⃣ Abisko: get off at Abisko Turiststation, not Abisko Östra. Turiststation is the one by the lodge 4️⃣ The Aurora Sky Station: night visits 19 October to 27 March, 20:30 to 01:00, from 1,295 SEK with overalls and boots Abisko is the driest place in Sweden, about 349 mm of rain and snow a year, which is why it's an aurora base. One change this winter: there's no ski patrol on the Nuolja mountain and only single-ride chairlift tickets are sold, so ride up for the lights and don't ski down. Tickets went on sale on 19 October.
