A winter weekend in Kraków, and the two things to book before the flight ❄️
Kraków is my favourite winter city break in Europe: beautiful, compact and easy.
📍 Day 1: the Main Square, the Cloth Hall and St Mary's, where a trumpeter plays from the tower on the hour
📍 Day 1 evening: Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, ten minutes' walk south of the old town
📍 Day 2: one day trip, not both
Booking 1, Auschwitz-Birkenau: entry passes are online only at visit.auschwitz.org. Free entry still needs a named pass, booked up to 90 days ahead, and you bring ID.
Booking 2, Wieliczka Salt Mine: 135 m down, over 800 steps and 17 to 18 °C all year. Allow two to three hours and bring a layer. Tickets from 121 PLN, and it's closed on 1 November. Some tours need online booking.
The Christmas market on the Main Square usually runs from late November to around 1 January. The 2026 dates aren't out yet.
