A winter drive along the Basque coast from Bilbao into France, with drive times and the closures that catch people out.

Spain's north coast in winter: not the sun coast, the food coast 🌊
San Sebastián in January beats it in August, and I'll argue that with anyone.
📍 Bilbao. The Guggenheim opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 19:00. Closed Mondays, so don't make Monday your Bilbao day
🚗 47 min to Gaztelugatxe: the hermitage up a zigzag of stone steps. Free booking on busy days only, and skip it in an orange weather alert
🚗 1 h 30 to Getaria: a fishing port. Come for the fish and txakoli, the local white wine
🚗 28 min to San Sebastián: pintxos bars, and on 20 January the whole city drums for the Tamborrada
🚗 42 min to Biarritz, over the border in France. I'd come for the waves, not the beach
About 211 km of driving in all. This isn't where you go for winter sun, that's the south. I'd pick it over the south in January anyway, because here the food is the point.
